Bhopal , April 12, 2008l: Madhya Pradesh Government has said its `Ladli Laxmi Yojana has brought about sea change in the society’s attitude towards the girl child and improving sex ratio in the state.
"Following implementation of this scheme, the negative tendency in the society towards girls has started to undergo change. Now, birth of a girl fills a family with happiness and joy," an official release today said.
The scheme, announced by chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan at a panchayat at his residence in November last, has led to considerable increase in the number of families who are now opting family planning after two daughters, it said.
To top it all, the disparity in sex ratio is also coming down. In this connection, tribal-dominated Mandla district has set am example.
The scheme is for the benefit of the girl child belonging to below poverty line families. Under it, Rs 6,500 would be deposited by the state government in the name of a girl child on the day she is born, which would accumulate to Rs one lakh after 18 years. This money will be then handed over to the girl.
Last two years figures of family planning in Narain Ganj block of Mandla indicate pleasant change in the people s mindset towards girls.
In all, 388 family planning operations were conducted in Narain Ganj during 2006-07. Of these only five couples had adopted family planning after the birth of two daughters.
