Bhopal,12 May:Gas Tragedy Relief and Rehabilitation Minister Shri Ajay Vishnoi today visited Union Carbide and inspected its defunct plant and spot from where gas had leaked. Officers of Gas Tragedy Department accompanied him.
Shri Vishnoi was told that the chemical waste present at the Union Carbide plant has been collected in the year 2005 and kept in a safe shade. Shri Vishnoi inspected that shade also. He was informed that mainly two types of wastes have been kept in the shade. Out of this, 350 metric tonnes of chemical waste would be transported to Ankleshwar in Gujarat and incinerated there. Rest of the waste is 40 metric tonnes of lime sludge which would be used for land filling in Gujarat. Shri Vishnoi apprised himself of transportation arrangements. He was informed that all necessary transportation arrangements are being made at the administrative level as per directives of the Supreme Court.
Later, the Gas Relief Minister visited the gas-affected slum area near Union Carbide complex. He inspected drinking water arrangements at Nawab Colony. He also inspected the water supply arrangements for supply of water from Kolar dam in the area. He also inspected solar pond and land fill near Union Carbide plant. He gathered information about training programmes for gas victims’ rehabilitation. Those also present on the occasion included Zahreeli Gas Kand Sangharsh Morch convener Shri Alok Pratap Singh and convener of Gas Peedit Mahila Udyog Sangathan Shri Abdul Jabbar.
