Jammu, June 17: Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu Prof. Amitabh Mattoo has been nominated as a the member of National Knowledge Commission.
The order of nominating Prof. Amitabh Mattoo as member of National Knowledge Commission was issued by the Planning Commission, Government of India after the approval of Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh. This is a prestigious part time honorary position.
The National Knowledge Commissions is a high level advisory body to Prime Minister of India created with the objective of transforming India into knowledge Society. It covers sectors from education to e-governance.
Prof. Amitabh Mattoo as the member of National Knowledge Commission has the mandate to guide policy and direct reforms focusing on key areas like education, science and technology , agriculture, industry and e-governance.
The National Knowledge Commission headed by the Chairman Mr. Sam Pitroda includes other members Dr. Ashok Ganguly, Professor P. Balaram, Dr. Jayati Ghosh, Dr. Deepak Nayyar, Mr. Nandan Nilekani and Ms. Sujatha Ramdorai.
National Knowledge Commission coordinates with various Union Ministries & state governments, and reports directly to the Prime Minister. The Planning Commission is the nodal agency for the NKC for planning and budgeting purposes as well as for handling Parliament related responses
The various state governments have mooted the proposal to setup knowledge commission to pro-actively initiate and adopt several key reforms and suggestions by the National Knowledge Commission.
This part time honorary assignment comes in the wake of Prof. Mattoo’s contribution to the University of Jammu and higher education sector in J&K especially Jammu region.
It is note worthy to mention that he has been recently been conferred with Padamshree in recognition of his contribution towards higher education particularly for transforming Jammu University.
