MAY 23, 2011 : University of Jammu (NAAC accredited ‘A’ Grade University) is committed to providing quality education and is devoted to its core function of production and transmission of knowledge. In this direction, the University of Jammu is focusing on research, publication, teaching, training, examination and extension.In order to execute its resolve to provide education of high standards and quality, the University of Jammu is conducting Jammu University Entrance Test ( JUET: 2011) for the first time for admission to all the Master’s Degree Programmes and Diploma Courses. University has received huge response from the students and 11,000 students have applied as against 6,000 applicants last year, to compete for forty two (42) academic programmes at the Masters level across Jammu University Campus (Departments), Offsite Campuses and the affiliated Colleges of the University. There has been a set and defined criteria for admission and each candidate was eligible to apply for maximum five courses.
Jammu University Entrance Test (JUET: 2011) shall be held w.e.f. May 26 to June 7, 2011. Each day, examination is spread over four sessions of 75 minutes duration each. For the convenience of the appearing candidates, nine Centres have been constituted for the entrance test across the State of Jammu & Kashmir: Jammu, Kathua, Reasi, Udhampur, Poonch, Rajouri, Bhaderwah, Srinagar and Leh. The Centres shall duly function under the respective Govt. Degree College Principals at these locations. In the interest of the smooth conduct, University of Jammu has gone a step ahead and appointed Observers for these Centres who shall be personally looking after the whole process within their designated jurisdiction.
Admission to the Master’s Degree Programmes and Diploma courses shall be made on the basis of Entrance Test score and the academic merit of the qualifying examination (graduation level). The final merit of the appearing candidate shall be calculated out of 100 by giving a weightage of 70 i.e. the marks obtained in the Entrance Test and a weightage of 30 to the percentage of marks obtained in the qualifying examination: the 30 shall be calculated by giving the weightage of 10% to the percentage of marks in Part I, II and III separately. Also, there will be negative marking. Every wrong answer shall be awarded minus (-) 0.33 marks. Every candidate is required to obtain a minimum of 21 marks out of 70 questions for each subject/ programme for general category candidates and 17 marks for candidates belonging to SC/ST/ST (residents of Leh and Kargil) category.
During the JUET: 2011, in their own interest the appearing students are required to follow special instructions. No candidate shall be allowed to appear without an Admit Card which can be downloaded from Jammu University Website: www.jammuuniversity.in. Appearing candidates shall have to bring a separate copy of Admit Card for each Session/Programme appearing for, which must be handed over to the supervisory staff on duty. Electronic gadgets including calculators, mobile phones, notebooks, table watches, I-pods, storage devices, any other calculating devices etc. and /or any handwritten material is strictly banned during the examination. Use of blue/black pen is only allowed for darkening the circle/ovals on the OMR Sheet. Use of eraser/ whitener is not allowed. Candidates are strongly advised to enter the Examination Hall 20 Minutes before the commencement of the Test. If any candidate tries to disrupt the conduct of the Entrance Test or attempts to use the unfair means, he/she shall be disqualified from JUET: 2011. The candidates shall be allowed to leave the examination hall only after expiry of the prescribed time of the examination.
Meanwhile, University of Jammu has seen phenomenal growth in the past few years. University has set up its Campuses at multiple locations across Jammu Province. These Campuses are progressing well, although a lot needs to be done to bring them up to the same standard as the main Campus in Jammu city. The University has recently started M.Sc. IT programme at Kishtwar Campus. The MBA Programme in Kathua and Bhaderwah Campuses is running successfully. MCA and English are also running successfully in Bhaderwah Campus besides other programmes at Udhampur and Ramnagar Campuses. Several other proposed Post Graduate Courses across all the Campuses are in disciplines of Earth Science, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Environmental Sciences, Kashmiri, Geology (Hydrology and Soil Dynamics), Applied Physics (5 years integrated course), Hotel Management, Chinese and Asian Languages (5 years integrated course), Physical Education, Fisheries, English and European Languages (5 years integrated course), Education and Energy Management and the like.
On the infrastructural front, the Institute of Mountain Environment is coming up in Bhaderwah Campus. Jammu University has been allotted land for the Kathua Campus and will soon begin construction of the first building there. A building has been renovated in Reasi for the use of the University. Similarly, construction in Udhampur Campus is in progress on the land duly allotted by the Government to the University last year. Establishing its Campuses at Poonch and in the Patnitop Circuit is one of the topmost priorities of the University. The buildings and Campuses are being designed and planned in accordance with the latest environmental and green building norms.
The initiatives of the University related to development of the Campuses have received generous support from the University Grants Commission (UGC), New Delhi, which has sanctioned Rs 117 crores recently for the construction of buildings on the Campuses. This is for the first time in the history of Jammu University that such huge grants have been approved by the UGC. Besides, the University has received a special grant of Rs 9 crores from the Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi for the acquisition of expensive high-end equipment and for the promotion of teaching and research initiatives in the disciplines of Science. Also, eight Departments of the University viz.; Physics, Commerce, The Business School, Political Science, Geology, Chemistry, Botany and Environmental Sciences have been recognized by the UGC under Special Assistance Programme (SAP).
Furthermore, the University has been able to bring examination schedules back on track and is now declaring results on time. The academic Calendar is strictly followed in the interest of the students. Furthermore, the Ph.D. programme has been streamlined in line with new UGC guidelines for the larger benefit of the scholars. Several new programmes have been introduced or are on the cards, such as MBA: International Business which is beginning in August 2011. As one of the major initiatives, the Office of the Dean Student Placements has been created with sole responsibility to assist the Departments/Campuses in the final placement of the students.
Besides academics, other important components of the University life like the sports and cultural activities are also given due importance for the overall development of the students. Earlier this year, the University organized Virasat-e-Riyasat, a three day student festival of music, dance and drama in which several universities of the State sent their teams and participated enthusiastically. The University also hosted the All India Universities Fencing Championship in which the Jammu University Men’s Team emerged as the overall champions, thereby retaining the title that they had won last year in Chandigarh. The University is now constructing a state-of-the art fencing hall so that the University team can retain its edge in this sport.
