Chandigarh: Timely action by District Child Marriage Prevention Officer, Mrs. Sadhna Mittal prevented three minor girls from being forcibly married at three different places in Sirsa district. Mrs. Mittal and local police apprised the girls’ parents and relatives that marrying a minor would be illegal and there exists provision of punishment under the Child Marriage Act. Following this, they gave a written assurance to postpone the marriage till the girls attained marriageable age.Mrs. Mittal had received information that a minor girl, Anjubala, 15, of village Kussar was to be married to Pawan, a resident of Rajasthan. Acting swiftly, she immediately informed the Sirsa police which immediately responded to the complaint and sent a police team to the village. The team demanded proof of the girl being an adult on which Anju informed that her date of birth was June 24, 1996.
In another case, marriage of Jyoti, of 15-16 years and a resident of Bhdolyawai was being solemnized with Shalendra of village Bani. It was prevented with timely action. Similarly, Sonu, 17 years, of village Bappan was saved from under age marriage by timely action of Mrs. Mittal and local police. Sonu daughter of Gurcharna was being married to Veerbhan son of Desraj of Rania. The marriage was to be solemnized on March 13, 2011.
