PANCHKULA, Nov 5 :Baptist School of Chandigarh just managed to snatch a wafer-thin one-point victory over luckless Holy Child School of Panchkula in the girls quarter-final match in the 5th Emily Memorial Basketball Tournament being organised by St Xavier’s School, Panchkula at its premises today.
With one minute and 56 seconds left, Baptist School were leading by a slender lead of one point (9-8). Holy Child had opportunities with fast breaks and free throws to gain lead. On one occasion, the ball came out after spinning in the ring. With 36 seconds left, Holy Child with full court press, got four free throws but their star player Gul Walia could not sink even a single free throw. Gul had otherwise scored all eight points for her team.
For Baptist, Nimisha topscored for their team with six points. Gayatri and Alishka contributed two and one point, respectively.
Hosts Xavier’s School of Panchkula outclassed Delhi Public School, Pinjore by 23-2 in a one-sided quarter-final match. Payal (12) and Sakshi (8) were the main scorers for the winners.
Defending champions New Public School, Sector 18 overcame a stiff resistance from St Anne’s School-32 by 19-12 and moved into semi-finals. Neha (8), Karamjit (5) and Smiti (5) were mainly responsible for NPS’ win. Gagan and Niharika scored four points each for St Anne’s.
The semi-final line-up is: NPS-18 vs Baptish School Chandigarh and St Xavier’s Panchkula vs St Kabir School-26 Chandigarh.
Holders New Public School, Sector 18 took their appointed place in the boys semi-final after defeating Chaman Lal DAV School, Sector 11 Panchkula by 35-18. Sartaj (11), Dilbag (6) and Surinder (6) were the main scorers for the winners. Harkirat contributed six points for CL DAV.
St Xavier’s Mohali, Shishu Niketan Panchkula, Holy Child Panchkula, St Xavier’s Panchkula, Tender Heart Chandigarh adn St Xavier-44 Chandigarh moved into quarter-finals after beating their respective opponents in pre-quarter-final matches.
Earlier, Panchkula Deputy Commissioner Rajinder Kataria inaugurated the tournament. Principal George Shear and members of the organising committee welcomed the chief guest.
