Chandigarh, Nov 4- Haryana Industries and Commerce Minister, Mr Randeep Singh Surjewala today said that those who are being governed must get justice and those who are governing against the norms must be punished.
Mr Surjewala was participating in the panel discussion on the topic “Can corruption be cured”, at the 9th India Today Conclave in New Delhi today where Haryana was adjudged as the Most Improved Large State and was given two awards –one in the field of Education and the other in Health. The awards were given away by Union Finance Minister, Mr Pranab Mukherjee and received by Mr Surjewala.
Mr Randeep Singh Surjewala said that social norms, improvement in procedures and technological support can be helpful in eradicating corruption to a great extent, if not entirely.Congratulating India Today for taking up such a contemporary issue, Mr Surejewala said that fight against corruption really started seriously with introduction of RTI. It has played as a catalyst and today accountability is the order of the day. Mr Surjewala said that mass movement cannot solve the problem and institutional attacks are not going to help. However, situation can be transformed with technological support to a great extent. Along with citizen charter, connectivity through broadband Improvement in PDS, national land reforms, e-governance, e-payment and such like other measures can prove helpful.
Mr Surjewala said that corruption has many shapes forms and definitions. We should also look within, whether somewhere in someway, have we ever added to corruption by trespassing, over jumping the red light, paying for quick result in our favour, whether we deserve or not. But we need not be pessimistic. If our intents are clear, we can meet the challenge of corruption. Awareness is the key to success, he added.
During the question-answer session, answering a question that there seem to be two Indias — one which is advanced and powerful and the other which reflects corruption, inflation and poverty, Mr Surjewala said that both Indias are there, but the gap between the two is narrowing down.
Two panel discussions were also held on this occasion. Topic for the second panel discussion was about the finances to the States. Mr Surjewala made the point that those states and areas, which are backward, should get more financial support for progress. The cities like Gurgaon and Hyderabad which are providing more revenue should also be provided more financial support, so that they may generate more revenue.
Union Minister Mr S.Jaipal Reddy and Uttarakhand, Chief Minister Major Gen.(Retd) B. C. Khanduri, were the other participants in the panel discussion, which was conducted by veteran journalist, Mr M.J. Akbar.
