New Delhi,6 May:(Rajya Sabha):According to the information furnished by the University Grants Commission (UGC), around 20% teaching posts were lying vacant in Central Universities as on 31st October, 2007.With a view to enabling the central higher educational institutions to meet the existing shortfall of quality teachers and to go ahead with their expansion plans on account of implementation of 27% quota for other backward classes, the steps taken by the Government include, enhancing the age of superannuation of teachers from 62 to 65 years, allowing the institutions to re-employee the teachers after superannuation till the age of 70 years, requiring the Committee constituted to review the scales of pay of teachers in the Universities and Colleges to make recommendations on ways and means of attracting and retaining talented persons in the teaching profession.
The Chadha Committee is required to submit its report within one year of its constitutions, viz by 5th September, 2008.This information was given by the Minister of State for Human Resource Development, Smt. D. Purandeswari in reply to a question in Rajya Sabha today.
