The Government has revised the guidelines for adoption of Indian children by foreigners, the Rajya Sabha was informed on Thursday.
“Guidelines for adoption have been revised and notified on June 27 as ‘Guidelines Governing the Adoption of Children, 2011’,” Women and Child Development Minister Krishna Tirath said in a written reply on Thursday.
She said, “The Adoption Guidelines stipulate mandatory post adoption follow up for their children placed both in domestic as well as inter-country adoption. This is done for a period of two years after adoption and is conducted by authorised adoption agencies.”“A total of 2,080 children were adopted internationally from India during the last three years i.e. 2008, 2009 and 2010,” she said.
During 2010, the total reported adoptions in India were 6,286 out of which 5,693 were domestic and 593 were inter-country ones.
