New Delhi,9 May:Spurred by its newly acquired Navratna status, India’s Central Transmission Utility Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) has embarked on a major CSR initiative by adopting six Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) in three states. Three ITIs will be adopted in the State of Bihar and one each in the States of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. POWERGRID will bring into play its rich pool of experience in power engineering to assist in revision of old curricula, development of new curriculum to make ITIs market driven, upgrading the skill of instructors, providing guest faculty, helping ITI in development of specification of equipment, ‘on-the-job’ training/ Industrial visits to trainees, etc.
This unique programme, aimed at promoting quality technical education, reaffirms the social commitment of POWERGRID, which prides itself on being a responsible corporate citizen. Whenever calamities of extraordinary scale have plundered the country and rendered millions homeless, POWERGRID has generously deployed its resources to provide succour to the devastated areas. During the 1999 super-cyclone in Orissa and the massive Gujarat earthquake of 2001, POWERGRID swung into action with tremendous alacrity to assist in relief operations. In 2004, when massive waves caused by the Tsunami wreaked havoc in vast swathes of the country, POWERGRID responded with promptness and vigour to reach the needy in time.
In accordance with the welfare policy guidelines, Women employees of POWERGRID are encouraged to take active part in the ‘Mahila Samitis’ involved in upliftment of underprivileged and downtrodden people. Training was recently imparted to physically challenged women at Western Region for making leather goods. The company has also been carrying out an information campaign against Female infanticide among rural areas around Chekkanoorani Substation Madurai, a region notorious for this inhuman practice.
POWERGRID has within the overall corporate ethics internalized the principles of sustainable development. A corporate Environmental and Social Policy and Procedures has been developed since 1998 and adopted to address the environment and socio-economic issues arising from its activities.
