The situation in India Gate has again become tense on Sunday evening with police using water cannons again. The police have resorted to lathicharge to quell the protestors.The protestors broke barricades, started pelting stones and virtually attacked the police.
The police had no other option but to resort to teargas shells.Hours after police evacuated demonstrators from Raisina Hills and Sonia Gandhi’s Residence, high drama was witnessed at India Gate on Sunday when agitators resisted police attempts to detain them for defying prohibitory orders to protest against the gangrape of a young girl.
The police clamped prohibitory orders in New Delhi district and asked protesters to stage demonstrations at Ramlila Maidan.Eight metro stations closed in the vicinity of India Gate has been closed as a precautionary measure.
Protests also spilled over outside Saket district court, where the case pertaining to this gangrape is going on.Delhi Police has said that steps have been taken for meeting all the demands of the protesters.Special Commissioner Dharmendra Kumar said that a committee is being formed to look into the issue of enhancing punishment for the heinous crime.
He also said that there will be an enquiry commission under the chairmanship of a retired Supreme Court Chief Justice.
Dharmendra Kumar also appealed to the protesters not to resort to violence and maintain calm. He also said that fast day to day prosecution of the case will be ensured.
He also alleged that some anti social elements among the protesters are bringing a bad name to the agitation.The condition of the 23-year-old girl, who was gangraped last Sunday, continues to be critical.Doctors had also said they are keeping the patient on high doses of antibiotics and high standards of hygiene two important factors for preventing infection.
The victim underwent surgery for sepsis. Her vital parameters stable. The medical bulletin released by Safdarjung Hospital, states that condition of the victim is still a matter of concern with regard to spread of infection.
