A National Committee (NC) headed by Prime Minister Dr. ManMohan Singh has been constituted for commemoration of the 150th birth anniversary of Mahamana Madan Mohan Malaviya. The NC held its first meeting on 26th July 2011 for deciding on the broad scope of activities that would be undertaken under the commemoration.
A National Implementation Committee (NIC) headed by Dr. Karan Singh, MP has been constituted for considering proposals pertaining to organising various activities/events under the commemoration. Kumari Selja, Minister for Culture and HUPA, Shri Salman Khurshid, Minister for Law and Shri Satish Chandra Mishra, MP, Rajya Sabha are the other dignitaries in the NIC. Shri Giridhar Malaviya, Former Justice, Allahabad High Court, Dr. Lalji Singh, Vice Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University, Smt Rita Bahuguna Joshi, Chairperson, Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee and Shri P.L Jaiswal, Founder Patron, Mahamana Malaviya Mission, New Delhi are also members of the NIC.
The first meeting of the National Implementation Committee (NIC) was held on 18th October, 2011 wherein various commemoration related proposals were deliberated upon. Subsequent to this, the commemoration started with the Inaugural Function on 27th December, 2011 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi where Dr. Manmohan Singh, Prime Minister was the Chief Guest. This occasion was also graced by Smt. Sonia Gandhi, Chairperson, National Advisory Council and UPA. Dr. Karan Singh, MP and Chairman, NIC, Shri Kapil Sibal, Minister, HRD and Communications and IT and Kumari Selja, Minister of Culture and HUPA were also present on the occasion. During this programme, two biographies on Mahamana Madan Mohan Malaviya (one in Hindi and one in English) were released by the Chairperson, NAC and UPA Smt. Sonia Gandhi. A special Commemorative Stamp was released by the Prime Minister. The Inaugural Function was attended by the dignitaries from the Government, foreign embassies, Banaras Hindu University alumni and about 500 school students.
The Second Meeting of the NIC was held on 6th January 2012 under the Chairmanship of Dr. Karan Singh, MP. This meeting was attended by the Minister of Culture and HUPA Kumari Selja and Minister of Law & Justice and Minority Affairs Shri Salman Khurshid . Various suggestions mooted by the BHU and Mahamana Malaviya Mission, New Delhi were discussed in this meeting. In the meeting various activities/programmes to be undertaken under the yearlong commemoration were decided which include:
Release of popular books on Mahamana Madan Mohan Malaviya; translation of books on Mahamana in different languages; organizing lecture series, seminars and conferences in various universities throughout the country; a seminar on inter-faith issues involving Benaras Hindu University, Aligarh Muslim University, Central University of Tibetan Studies, Osmania University, Ambedkar University,etc.; travelling exhibition on the contribution of Malaviya ji; compilation / preparation of archives and digitization of publications related to Mahamana Malaviya; development of Malaviya Bhawan in BHU; establishment of Malaviya Memorial Library at Malaviya Smriti Bhawan, New Delhi; special celebrations in countries where Pt. Malaviya travelled; release of commemorative coins of the denomination of Rs 150/- and Rs 5/- in the memory of Pt. Malaviya and establishment of Institute of Oriental Research in BHU for the cultural integration of the countries in South East Asia, etc.
It was also decided that the closing ceremony of the year long Commemoration of Mahamana Madan Mohan Malaviya would be held on 25th December, 2012 at BHU, Varanasi.
