Chandigarh,1 Nov :The Dept. of Indian Theatre celebrated the day by planting 36 saplings as a mark of completing 36 eventful years of its existence on Campus. The students, staff and faculty engaged themselves in inter-action and activity.Mr. Zulfiqar Khan, one of the most illustrious alumni of the Dept. was honoured for his commendable work with under privileged children. Prof. V. Mehndiratta, who has a very long association with the Dept. as a theatre person and a visiting professor, was the guest of honour. He gave the shawl of honour and a memento of books on behalf of the Dept.Chairperson Prof. Mahendra Kumar shared his personal experience and appreciation for Zulfiqar Khan.He spoke at length about the colourful journey of the Dept. since its inception in 1972 when he collaborated with its founder Prof. Balwant Gargi.
He said, “…each passed out student enjoys his peculiar place in my heart as does Zulfiqar. He gave up his career in Delhi and Mumbai to take up the challenge of working in slums for the uplift-ment of the underprivileged. He brought many of them at par with rest of the society with dignity through theatre”.
Zulfiqar Khan visibly touched by the gesture of his alma mater, expressed his deepest feelings and love for the role of Dept. in developing his personality and thought-process over the years. He said, “The seeds of the tree called Zulfiqar were sown right here in this wonderful Dept. by my teachers. I learnt lessons from all of them. My Mahendra Sir is not only the finest teacher, designer and director we have in the city, he is also an embodiment of higher values of creativity in all spheres. My identity, the name of my group, ‘THEATRE AGE” was given to me by him according to the Chairperson, Dept. of Indian Theatre.
