Chandigarh, August 16, 2010: Today, in a training programme at Karuna Sadan, Sector 11, for health workers associated with a project jointly managed by Yuvsatta & State AIDS Control Society, Chandigarh (UTSACS), it was decided to set-up Condom Corners in areas of Manimajra, Bapu Dham Colony, Colony No. 4 & Daria village on pilot basis. In these areas Yuvsatta is running with help of UTSACS a targeted intervention project for commercial sex workers.
Expressing the need for devising new strategies for condom promotion Sandeep Mittal, Dy. Director (TI), UTSACS said that promotion of Condoms is very important not only for family planning purposes but also for prevention of sexually transmitted diseases and HIV/AIDS. He also said that despite of high rate of literacy in urban areas the Condom usage is going down due to many myths and inhibitions associated with condoms. And more and more such programmes should be organised at regular intervals for all segments of society to take the message of healthy life-style to masses at large.
Parmod Sharma, Coordinator, Yuvsatta shared that individual self-risk-perception is a strong motivator for behaviour change and condom corners are as good as any form of communication. In fact, in order to increase easy availability of condoms ‘condom corners’ should be set-up at many more such places.
