Balbir Singh, CHANDIGARH, NOV 12 : L.Yogaraj of Tamil Nadu stole the show by establishing a new meet record in high jump for boys Under-20 on the opening day of the 24th National Junior Athletics Championships at the Chamunda Stadium in Mysore on Wedensday.
He cleared the bar placed at a height of 2.12 metres against the old meet record of 2.09 metres standing in the name of KR Roishan of Kerala since 1999. However, he missed the national mark of 2.15 metres standing in the name of West Bengal high jumper Hari Shankar Roy.
Nikhil Chittarasu of Pondicherry and C.J.Thomas of Maharashtra got silver and bronze medals with 2.06m and 2.06m, respectively.
Poonam Raia of Haryana won silver medal in javelin with a throw of 40.40 metres in girls under-20 category. Beauti Deori of Assam displayed more explosive power as she measured 40.86 metres for the gold medal. Fultushi Ghosh (West Bengal) recorded 38.69metres for bronze medal.
Long distance Uttar Pradesh runner Suresh Kumar Patel won the grueling 10,000 metres race for boys under-20 by clocking 31:29.54. Rajesh R of Kerala timed 32:02.90 for silver and Dinesh Joon (Delhi) got bronze in 32:29.69.
Tamil Nadu were leading the medal tally with four gold and one silver. Kerala were occupying second spot with two gold, two silver and two bronze medals. Uttar Pradesh (1-1-1) and Andhra Pradesh (1-1-0) were at the third and fourth positions, respectively.
