Chandigarh, August 11th: Chandigarh city is getting ready for a packed week of events and special offers to celebrate World Tourism Week from 26 September – 1 October. For the first time this year, Chandigarh Administration has planned a gamut of activities to celebrate World Tourism day, falling on September 27. The celebration, which showcases tourism in Chandigarh, encompasses everything from a free guided tour around the city to International Cyclothon to musical evenings to fun frolic activities. This was decided in a meeting convened by Secretary Tourism, Sh. Ram Niwas.
On September 26, Chandigarh Administration will hold Chandigarh Cyclothon on International standards. Morning Raga on Indian Classical & Fusion Music at Sukhna Lake and Musical Evening by a renowned Punjabi Singer in Sector 17 will be held on Sep 27. Quiz on the Theme of Tourism in Chandigarh will be organized on Sep 28 with the participation of students from all Government and Private Schools. Whereas Tourism Painting Competition and a play titled “Shatur murg†by Rakesh Bedi will be staged on 29 September, Quawali Evening will be held on Sep 30 at Lake Sector 42. On October 1, the celebrations will conclude with Ghazal evening at Tagore Theatre.
Besides this, 15 Food festivals will be organized in various hotels and restaurants during the World Tourism Week celebrations till the end of Commonwealth Games. The Chandigarh College of Arts & Chandigarh College of Architecture will prepare floats and mascots of Commonwealth Games will be set up at Sukhna Lake and all prominent places in Chandigarh during the celebration of World Tourism Week. The mascot will move around the city on Hop on Hop Off Bus to create festivity ambiance in the city beautiful till the end of Commonwealth games.
To make the Sukhna Lake a very happening place during the week long celebrations, other tourism activities such as tattoo painting, sketching, portrait making, statue portrayal etc will be done by the students of Chandigarh College of Arts .In addition, competitions like singing, dancing, rock band live performances and other cultural evenings will also be held at Sukhna Lake during the week long celebrations.
Prominent tourist places, Sukhna Lake, Open Hand Monument and UT Secretariat will be illuminated as a part of celebrations. Special Food Festival will be arranged by CITCO and special discounts will be offered in CITCO hotels/outlets. CITCO will also arrange complimentary rides on its popular Hop on Hop Off tourist bus for the tourists visiting Chandigarh on World Tourism Day i.e. 27th September. Chandigarh Hotel and restaurant association are adding to the festivities too with special offers for Chandigarh World Tourism Week and also arrangement will be made to welcome visitors at Airport and Railway Station by the students of CIHM & IHM on the World Tourism Day.
New publicity material is being printed. In addition to this, all taxi drivers and auto rickshaw drivers will be specially trained to welcome tourists.
