The India Post, Chandigarh, 26 September :Strongly advocating the need for active public-private partnership for strengthening tourism infrastructure in the City, the Punjab Governor and Administrator, Union Territory, Chandigarh, Gen. (Retd.) S.F. Rodrigues, PVSM VSM, promised to offer seamless and painless tourism-related quality services, to make Chandigarh as the destination of Choice, for tourists from all parts of the globe. The City has a great tourism potential and our endeavour is to change the image of Chandigarh as a stopover and attract the tourists to spend time here and enjoy its breath taking natural splendor.
In a message, on the eve of World Tourism Day, General Rodrigues said that Chandigarh, over the years, has acquired the status of a destination of choice, for tourism, due to its picturesque location, in the foothills of Shivaliks and its modern architecture, unique planning, well built efficient infrastructure, quality of civic life, sprawling green open spaces and above all a cosmopolitan outlook, with hospitable people from all walks of life, living in complete peace and harmony. We, as concerned citizens, must make coordinated efforts to boost its image as a preferred tourist destination for the world and showcase the significant features of the City beautiful.
Giving an account of the new initiatives, for strengthening the tourism network, General Rodrigues said that we are in the process of implementing various plans to place Chandigarh and the region, on the global tourism map with the focus on extending efficient medical, educational and entertainment oriented facilities. He said that we are setting up a mega theme park, the first of its kind in the country to highlight Indian culture and mythology, which would attract atleast half a million visitors annually, which will give a major boost to the tourism scene. He said that a Multi-media-cum-Film City is being set up which would be a major tourist attraction, featuring modern animation and showcasing the latest trends in multi-media, with digital studios and TV productions. He said that medical tourism is also being promoted, by setting up a medi-city, with full-fledged network of research facilities. Kalagram has been upgraded, making it a hub of tourism and cultural activities of the region. A sculpture park has been created at this place which is a major attraction.
New tourism related features have been added, in the Sukhna Lake tourist spot. The world famous Rock Garden, Botanical garden, Rose Garden and beautiful Parks recently created in different sectors, have given a new look to the landscape of the City.
General Rodrigues said that various new innovative programmes like launching of the City card, introducing the concept of tourism police for helping tourists, international food festival, music nights, senior citizens picnic and joy rides are among the new activities planned as part of this day long celebrations. He said that the Administration is also focusing on attracting tourists through special packages in the special field of interest. He appealed to the people of Union Territory to actively participate in various programmes.
The Administrator expressed the hope that with the active cooperation of the citizens and a major response from the tourists, Chandigarh would become one of the most sought after destinations of the Country in the coming years.
