Chandigarh: World sparrow day was celebrated today in PGI’s Nivedita Crèche. An inspiring cultural program highlighting various issues related to house sparrow was conducted by children. The chief guest for the function was Dr Y K Chawla, director PGI and the Guest of honor Dr Prasad, the evolutionary biologist from ISER who informed about the varieties of sparrow present in the tricity such as Sind sparrow and the house sparrow.
Touching songs about rapid disappearance of house sparrows from urban environment were recited by children. A short play chronicling the decline and then disappearance of house sparrow from human landscape was performed by children of teachers flat, PGI. A quiz was also organized among children of Nivedita crèche to create awareness about various common birds of Chandigarh using audio-visual tools. Strong emotional appeals for saving house sparrow were further echoed through beautiful artwork, songs and cultural activities. Children sincerely appealed to all adults to spare some time from their daily rigor and vigor of professional life and ponder over declining number of house sparrows in city beautiful, Chandigarh.
Dr Bhavneet Bharti said that “World Sparrow Day on 20th March is everyone’s chance to rise to the challenge of saving them. She appealed that wherever you are, whoever you are, let’s meet for this unique cause to express our joint responsibility to care for nature. She also quoted a famous quote that “we have not inherited this earth from our parents to do with it what we will. We have borrowed it from our children and we must be careful to use it in their interests as well as our own. ”
