The India Post Staff,6 June:Today make people, especially the younger generation aware of eco-reserves of this region in the form of rich flora, fauna and wetlands, and to mark the World Environment Day, YUVSATTA, Department of Environment, Chandigarh Administration & BIG 92.7FM organized, a ‘CLEANLINESS DRIVE’, at regulator end of Sukhna Lake, Chandigarh.
Around 200 students from Govt. Model Sr. Sec. School of Sector 8 B, Govt. Sr. Sec. School, Manimajra Town & Govt. Model High School, (Timber Market), Sector 26 along with staff of Deptt. of Environment and volunteers of Children’s Centre of Yuvsatta at Bapu Dham participated in this event.
Despite the rainy weather with in an hour the young brigade cleared around 350 kg. of waste/garbage in the shape of puja samagri, polythene bags, plastic bottles and waste material from the lake. Ms. Shailja from BIG 92.7FM also presented gift hampers to all the participating students. Speaking on the occasion Mr. PJS Dhadwal, Addl. Director, Deptt. of Environment said that every effort should be made by all residents of Chandigarh to keep Sukhna Lake clean of filth and garbage. Water bodies like Sukhna are an asset to our city and it’s our collective responsibility to keep it clean and attractive for migratory birds and regular visitors and tourists.
Cleanliness drive was followed by an interaction of young children with the Chief Guest Mr. Ishwar Singh, Director, Deptt. of Environment, Chandigarh Administration on ‘Challenges facing the World Environment’, at Botanical Garden Auditorium. In his addressing Mr. Ishwar Singh asked youngsters to raise awareness against 7 P’s obstructing preservation of environment and these are Pollution, Parking, Population (both human and vehicular-for which youngsters should use Cycles), Polythene bags, Parthenium, misuse of Power (electricity) and Pani (Water). Mr. Ishwar Singh also honoured three Principals of Schools for promoting a ‘Culture of Cycling’ amongst the students, they are Mrs. Kuldevi Yadav of Govt. Model Sr. Sec. School, Sector 8 B, Dr. Vibha Ray of DAV Sr. Sec. School (Lahore), Sector 8 B & Mr. Rampal Sharma, Eco-Club incharge of Govt. Sr. Sec. School, Manimajra Town, Chandigarh received the award on his Principal’s behalf.
