By Vivek, Chandigarh, June 15: Elder abuse is a worldwide phenomenon, not confined to India alone. Such abuse takes many forms, physical violence being just one of them. A recent study commissioned by HelpAge India has revealed an alarming lack of awareness both among the elders and others about the issues involved. A seminar was organized by Chandigarh Senior Citizens’ Association and HelpAge India at the Govt Museum and Art Gallery, Sector 10 this morning with active support and patronage of Chandigarh Police. The specially chosen panel of speakers included Brig. Keshav Chandra, President CSCA,, who defined the problem and its rampant nature cutting across social boundaries, Prof. Raj Mohini Sethi (former Prof of Sociology, PU), who presented a Sociological Analysis of Abuse,Dr AS Khehra (former VC, PAU), President FEDSEN-Punjab, who gave some typical case studies., Sh. RS Ghumman, IPS, SP (Security and Vigilance), who spoke on the measures implemented in the UT for rendering expeditious assistance to the senior citizens. Sh HS Walia (former Jt Secy Law, Punjab), who apprised the audience about the legal remedies available.
