The India Post, Chandigarh, 19th February, 2009 :A Workshop on Legal Education for Women was organized by Government College for Girls, Sec-42, Chandigarh in the College Premises on 19th February, 2009.
The workshop was a part of Chandigarh Administration’s action plan for gender sensitization of valuing the Girl Child. Principal Mrs. Shashi Malik was the Chief Guest on this occasion. As many as 215 students participated in the workshop. Professor Vijay Nagpal of Law Department, Panjab University, Chandigarh delivered the key note on the rights of the women. Mrs. Madhu P. Singh apprised the students about legal framework of marriage and advised girls students to be vigil about their rights. Dr Geeta Joshi delivered a talk on domestic violence and quoted a number of legal interpretations concerning the rights of women in case of domestic violence. Mrs.Savita Sharma, a practicing advocate spoke on Administration of justice. Dr. Manjit Kaur, the convener, in her introductory address stated that the purpose behind this workshop was to provide legal education to the students and equip them to use it at the time of need and tackle their problems in the gender biased society.Students were divided into 4 groups for discussions and activities. They gave presentation in the form of skits and plays dealing with the theme of female foeticide, domestic violence and inside and outside home and their legal rights as juveniles. Vote of thanks was presented by Mrs. Mani Bedi, the Vice Principal of the college.
