CHANDIGARH-July 20, 2009:A Solar Eclipse will occur on the morning of 22nd July 2009. This will be a total eclipse in case viewed from central or eastern India. The total eclipse will traverse from the cities of Surat, Indore, Bhopal, Varanasi, Patna, Darjeeling and Dibrugarh in India before entering in to China. The totality in India will last for three and a half minutes to four minutes. The greatest eclipse will occur in the Pacific Ocean, South-East of Japan 8.00 a.m. (IST) for 6 minutes and 38 seconds.
The extent of the eclipse, however, will be ~80% in Chandigarh. The partial eclipse will initiate at the time of sun-rise around 5.30 a.m. and will last till 7.30 a.m. in Chandigarh.
The Dept. of Physics, P.U. will be making observations of the eclipse with the telescope.
Caution: It is dangerous to watch sun during eclipse or otherwise with telescope, binoculars or naked eyes as it can cause permanent blindness. Proper solar filter (e.g., Astro-solar film) should be used for viewing the sun. In case of a telescope, the filter should be always used with the objective and never with the eye-piece according to
