Chandigarh, October 05, 2015 : The updation of National Population Register (NPR) of Chandigarh city residents has started from 15th September 2015 and will continue till 14th October 2015. In the updation process, 12 digits unique number of Aadhaar will be recorded. However, in case Aadhaar is not available, enrollment number will be recorded. The Deputy Commissioner in the Union Territory has been appointed as District Registrar of Citizen Registration and is delegated with the powers for appointing enumerators to carry out the operation.
The updating of NPR and seeding of Aadhaar in the NPR database is being carried out in pursuance to the sub-rule (4) of Rule 3 of the Citizenship (Registration of Citizens and issue of National Identity Cards) Rules, 2003. In accelerating updation of the NPR under the tagline ‘My Identity My Pride’ wide publicity has been made for recognition as ‘I am Resident of India’. The National Population Register is a register of the usual residents of the country. The NPR database collected during the 1st phase of 2011 Census in 2010 is being used for updating purposes. The project is being implemented by the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India. In all the States and Union Territories, authorities have been designated at district and tahsil level for updation of the Local Register of Usual Residents (LRUR). The updating process will provide mother database of all the usual residents of the country.
Government took a decisive step for updation of the NPR and seeding of Aadhaar number in the NPR database on approval of the plan this year in the month of June to untangle the National Population Register (NPR) and Aadhaar. The agencies viz., Registrar General of Citizen Registration, India, Ministry of Home Affairs, Unique Identification Authority of India, NITI Aayog, Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) Mission, Ministry of Finance and Government of States and Union Territories are working jointly for the success of this project.
Shri K.S. Bhatnagar, Joint Director-cum-Controlling Officer, Census Directorate (UT) has appealed to the entire population of the Union Territory to cooperate with the Enumerators by providing accurate and unambiguous information such as, name, father’s name, mother’s name, date of birth, address etc. for the households or any members of the family whose names are not found in the LRUR. It is an opportunity visiting at the residents’ door step to verify/update the information recorded in 2010.
