CHANDIGARH, September 26: The Syndicate of the Panjab University at its meeting held here today felicitated Professor R.C. Sobti, Vice-Chancellor, on his having been nominated by the UGC to attend the East Asian Higher Education Co-operation Forum from October 13 to 15 at Kunming, Yunnan, China. He is the only Vice-Chancellor to be nominated for this Forum.
Professor A.R. Rao of the University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences has also been felicitated on his having been selected for the conferment of Dr (Mrs) Manjushree Pal Memorial Award for the best Pharmaceutical Scientist Award – 2010 instituted by the Association of Pharmacy Teachers of India.
Dr Gurmeet Singh, Assistant Professor of the Department of Hindi and Fellow, Panjab University has also been felicitated on his receiving the State Award for Literary Journalism from the Haryana Sahitya Academy.
Several eminent personalities have also been recommended to be honoured with honoris cause degrees for their distinguished contributions in various fields of life.
The Syndicate recommended conferment of the degrees of Doctor of Science/Literature/Laws (honoris causa) and Vigyan Ratna on the following eminent persons:- Professor Shenggen Fan, Director General, International Food Policy Research Institute, Washington, D.C. (USA) has been recommended to be conferred the Doctor of Science (D. Sc.); Professor C.N.R. Rao, National Research Professor and Honorary President and Linus Pauling Research Professor, Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (Bangalore) has also been recommended for the conferment of the Doctor of Science (D. Sc.) degree.
Eminent author and celebrated journalist, Khushwant Singh has been recommended for conferment of the Doctor of Literature degree for his superb contribution in the field of journalism.
The Syndicate recommended Mr Som Nath Chatterjee, former Speaker of the Lok Sabha for the conferment of Doctor of Laws degree on him. While Prof. A.K. Sood of the department of Physics, Indian Institute of Science (Bangalore), has been recommended to be conferred the prestigious Vigyan Rattan Award on him.
The Syndicate also noted the important visit of Mr T.K.A. Nair, Principal Secretary to the Hon’ble Prime Minister to the Panjab University on October 9 to inaugurate the PU Radio Station and the Media Centre on the P.U. Campus. The Syndicate approved the appointment of Mr Anil Kapoor as Public Relations Officer for a period of six months.
The Syndicate approved the award of degrees of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) to the following candidates: Ms Saurabh Raina, Mr Kuljeet, Mr Kanchan Sharma, Mr Ajeet Kumar Negi, Ms Sajeela Awasthi, Ms Maninder Mallhi, Ms Purva Nirmohi, Mr Dasharath, Ms Indu Prabha Duggal, Mr Karamjit Singh, Mr Abdulminan, Mr Ved Parkash Sharma and Mr Mohsen Nikbakht.
