Chandigarh : As concerned Indian citizens, Student Human Rights Network (SHRN) started Fast to support Anna Hazare and Jan Lok Pal Bill at Student Centre, Panjab University, Chandigarh from 10 a.m to 7 p.m. Student Human Rights Network (SHRN) Chandigarh is regd. under Societies Registration Act, 1860 vide regd.no 4049. This organisation is promoting the cause of human rights since 2009. The fast began with chanting of National Anthem and raising of slogans like “ Vande Matram”. The chain hunger strike started with students sitting for the fast . These students included Ms. Divya Pandit, Mr. Buta Singh Bairagi , Ms. Deepikaa Gupta, Mr. Aman Grewal, Mr. Sobha Gir and Mr. Sunny Mehta from Centre from Human Rights and Duties.Mr. Buta Singh Bairagi, Chief Patron, Student Human Rights Network (SHRN) and Research Scholar, Centre for Human Rights & Duties, Panjab University, Chandigarh claimed the fast will continue till the demands are met and Anna Hazare’s views receive the government’s “full attention”. He said for the first time in forty three years, we have the chance to change the way politics is done. He urged the students “Let’s join together and stand with Anna Hazare to tackle corruption and clean up Indian politics. We have no time to lose”.
The President, Student Human Rights Network, Mr.SonyPal flagged off the Signature Campaign to endorse Jan LokPAL Bill. He said Anna Hazare has set the example. But only a national citizens movement can ramp up the pressure on Prime Minister Man Mohan Singh to endorse the bill and clean up politics and save Hazare’s life to endorse “Jan” Lokpal and save Hazare’s life.
A simplified version of civil society’s proposed bill and its salient feautures were also circulated among the youth at the Student Centre, Panjab University by Mr. Aman Grewal, Member , Student Human Rights Newtwork for awareness on the issue so that more and more people can join the cause and be part of the Anti-Corruption Movement.
Apart from students many faculty members, non-teaching staff also extended their support to the cause. Dr. Namita Gupta & Ms. Upneet Mangat, Assistant Professor, Centre for Human Rights & Duties expressed their solidarity. They emphasized – “Corruption in politics has become a plague across our country; it is draining our resources and demoralizing our nation. This bill would go a long way to deterring those that steal and undermine the public good. India has a proud history of people power overcoming oppression — today if we all stand with one voice we can fight this corruption that is poisoning our political system.”
Students from Centre for Human Rights and Duties and other faculties informed unless the government agrees to consider a powerful law that could rid Indian politics of the scourge of corruption they will continue fasting.
