Chandigarh :Director General and Mission Director, Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), Sh R.S. Sharma, IAS, today launched the Phase II of Aadhaar enrolment for regions under the jurisdiction of RO Chandigarh here today. Speaking on the occasion, Sh R.S. Sharma gave an insight on the refresh strategy for the next roll out of Aadhaar enrolments across the country. He apprised the media persons about the present mandate of UIDAI which is to provide Aadhaar numbers to about 40 crore residents, in addition to 20 crore enrolments that have already been done across the country.
He appreciated the progress made by RO Chandigarh in successfully meeting the target of Aadhaar enrolments across the region and confirmed that over 6.5 lakh enrolments for the Unique Identification (UID) number have been completed in Chandigarh out of which 88 per cent Aadhaar letters have been delivered. In Punjab 96.63 lakh enrolments have been conducted and around 80 per cent Aadhaar letters have been delivered. Similarly, in Haryana 5.8 lakh Aadhaar enrolments have been done and around 83.7 per cent Aadhaar letters have been delivered. In Himachal Pradesh 36.2 lakh Aadhaar enrolments have been done and 92.3 per cent Aadhaar letters have been delivered.
He also informed the media persons that enrolments across the region have started in the selective e-Sampark centres and the complete roll out would start from the first week of June, 2012. Besides, on boarding of banks on Aadhaar platform and authentication services have already started across the region. Various FI pilots including pension, scholarship, MNREGA payment, PDS, kerosene distribution etc are being conducted successfully in around 50 districts, out of which 10 districts fall under the jurisdiction of RO Chandigarh.
Mrs Keshni Anand Arora, Deputy Director General, Regional Office, Chandigarh, welcomed the chief guest Sh R.S. Sharma, along with other invitees to mark the event. She emphasised that the prime focus in phase II of Aadhaar enrolments would be social inclusion, covering the marginalised and socially disadvantaged sections of the society in the region. She stated that slum areas, deaf and dumb institutions and differently-abled persons would be enrolled on priority.
DDG, UIDAI, assured the DG that under his guidance RO Chandigarh would adopt a sweep approach by holding special camps to cover maximum number of residents across the region and the first such camp is already being held today at Chandigarh Housing Board.
