Dr. Avnish Jolly, Chandigarh 29th September, 2008:Centre for Adult, Continuing Education and Extension organized one day Seminar on “Violence Against Women” at Maloya Creche, Madrasi Colony, Maloya. More than 35 women participated in it. Dr Prabha Vig, Senior Project Officer from the Centre highlighted the objectives of the seminar as to make women aware of the violence going in the society against women and impart awareness on legal provisions available to them.
While speaking on the occasion, she said that erosion of traditional values, increasing criminal tendencies in the society, poor enforcement of legal provisions and depiction of violence in the media have contributed to greater atrocities in the society, which make women most susceptible to the violence. She further added that Women witness various form of violence such as Domestic Violence, Dowry harassment, Rape, Prostitution and so on.
She said no doubt constitution of India has provided various legal provisions to protect women like Hindu Marriage Act (1955), Dowry Prohibition Act (1961), Child Marriage Restraint Act (1979), Immoral Trafic Prevention Act (1956) and so on, but only few get the justice. She said that Justice Delayed is Justice Denied, it is only through proper awareness & empowerment and women together can stand to fight the violence. This is call for today because of growing insecurity rising in the society according to Dr. Sween, Director, CACEE, P.U.
