CHANDIGARH–April 29, 2008:The Center for Adult continuing Education & Extension, P.U., Chandigarh in collaboration with Don Bosco Navjevan Centre, Sector 24, Chandigarh organized One Day Seminar on Status of Girl Child in India at House No. 1600, Danik Bhaskar Colony, Sector 38, Chandigarh. More than 40 members of the community participated in theseminar. The main objective was to impart awareness to the participants regarding the dismal situation of Girl Child in India.
During the Seminar, a film Titled," Girl Child- A Fight for Dignity" prepared by the Centre for Adult and Continuing Education was shown to the participants. The Film highlighted the issues on which the Girl Child is discriminated in the society like; nutrition, health, education, dowry and mistreatments like female infanticide and sex selective abortions etc.
Dr (Mrs) Prabha Vig, Sr. Project Officer, Panjab University while speaking on the occasion said that when human civilization was evolving, the status of the Girl Child was undergoing devaluation. She. is subjected to atrocities like female infanticide, rape, molestation, early marriage, domestic labour and so on. She further added to improve the status of the Girl Child in the society we should focus on the positive aspects of the Girl Child and remove misconceptions and myths that affect her worth and self esteem. She further appealed the participants to send their daughters regularly to the school. Brother Anthony Raj from Don Bosco Centre also spoke on the occasion according to the Director, Dept. of Adult & Continuing Education, P.U.
