Madhup Yadav. Chandigarh. 24th February. :Around 100 students/teachers and counselor from various schools and colleges attended the two day Seminar being organized by Centre for Adult, Continuing Education & Extension, and Panjab University and Guidance & Counselling Cell for “Strengthening the Guidance and Counselling Services in Schools and Colleges”.
Professor R.C. Sobti, Vice-Chancellor, Panjab University, Chandigarh inaugurated the seminar. He emphasized on letting students choose vocations of their choice, depending upon their talent, aptitude and interest. When parents and teachers direct their children to do something, which is not in consonance with their interests they become directionless, ill adjusted and frustrated. He advised the teachers to recognize the creativity, ability, strengths and weaknesses of the children, before counseling and advising them.
It is about time that counselling cells are established in all education institutions; school and colleges to relieve our youth from stress and strain of academic pressures, competitions, emotional, vocational and personal pressures. The services of specialized and skilled counselors are the need of the hour. CBSE has taken right step in this direction and has instructed all the Senior Secondary Schools to set up Guidance and Counselling.
Professor N.K. Chadha from Department of Psychology, Delhi University, in his key note address said that counseling is required not only for problem children but also for a normal child to give them direction. He emphasized on the need of having trained counselors. “Counseling can create magic and counselor should be committed and dedicated. He emphasized on the need to extend counseling services to the rural school and colleges,” he said.
