19 July:About 90 boys and girls led by 10 teachers and principal Mrs. Sudesh Raghav ,from four schools of Chandigarh and Mohali, today participated in the Annual Swansongs and swings function .
The four schools which joined in the festivities were Government Model Senior Secondary Schools 32,44B , 46 and Shastri Model School Mohali. This function was organised by the Environment Society of India (ESI) at the Nature Discovery, Commonwealth Youth Programme, Asia center sector 12 Chandigarh. As young girls sitting under the 220 years old heritage peepal tree invited the rain with their songs,it created the magic.The thunderstorm and downpour captured into its snare.Braving heavy rain the students continued singing and enjoying the rain and swings.
Mr. S.K Setia director public Instruction (Schools) Chandigarh administration who was the chief guest in his speech said that sawan ke songs and swings are part of our cultural heritage and inspire the younger generation. ESI president .S K Sharma gave a talk on the swings and said that these cool down our bodies. Coordinator Om Parkash said that the month of sawan is welcomed by all and is a boom to the farmers.
A group song "Teri do takian di nokri mera lakhan da sawan janda" presented by the girls drew thunderous applause from the audience. Mrs Surinder Kaur sang rain song of Himachal "Sonee sonee Shimle dee sarkan jinde" and Mr. Krishan Rahi recited his verse "sawan da maheena waikho,sawan da maheena wey"Mrs Lipi Sharma sang a song of UP "aayee sawan rut aayee" .Others who sang were Tajwinder Kaur and Baljinder kaur.
On the concluding function Mr. Setia distributed traditional Kheer Puries among the participants .
