Chandigarh, September 13th: Mr. Ram Niwas IAS, Home-cum-Education Secretary, Union Territory of Chandigarh, inaugurated the rainwater harvesting project at the Govt. Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 46-D, an initiative of the Rotary Club of Chandigarh Midtown today. Commending the Rotary programme of implementing the project in 8 Govt. Schools of Chandigarh, he said the Department would set up similar facilities in other schools of the Union Territory.
Water is one of the focus areas of Rotary International today. The situation is becoming worse day by day in India. The water table is going down at an alarming rate in the city of Chandigarh. Rain water harvesting has become a universally accepted idea to mitigate the problem in the long term. Rotary Chandigarh Midtown will be setting up water harvesting facilities in Govt. Model Senior Secondary School, 46-D, Chandigarh, Govt. Model Senior Secondary School,47-D, Chandigarh, Govt. Model Senior Secondary School,35-D,Chandigarh, Govt. Senior Secondary School,38 s(W), Chandigarh, Govt. Model Senior Secondary School,10,Chandigarh. Govt. Model Senior Secondary School, Dhanas (Chd.), Govt. Model Senior Secondary School,23,Chandigar,Govt. Girls Senior Secondary School, 20-B,Chandigarh
Past Rotary Internal President Carl Wilhelm Stenhammar from Sweden who is currently the Chairman of the Rotary Foundation visited the Senior Secondary School, Sector 46 D, Chandigarh on August 27, 2010 to obtain a firsthand impression of Rotarians at work in the local community. According to Project Chairman Past District Governor Shaju Peter, the club will be spending approximately Rs.12 lakhs in above mentioned 8 schools in the next 3 months. The programme is funded by a Matching Grant from the Rotary Foundation. Rotarians of Chandigarh Midtown and the Rotary Club of Madison, USA have pooled their combined resources in this project.
After inauguration, Education Secretary, Mr.Ram Niwas planted a sapling named Sohanjana in the School premises. He also distributed the medicinal plants like Stetia and Tulsi among the members of the Rotary Club of Chandigarh Midtown.
