Punjab’s Government and Higher Technical Education Colleges and Universities today held a special meeting at SAS Institute,Mohali. Representatives from different Technical Education Colleges of Punjab participated in this. Representatives of private universities of Punjab like LPU,Jalandhar and Chitkara University also participated in this.Expressing his views on this matter Dr J S Dhaliwal , Head, Punjab Unaided Technical Institutes(PUTIA) condemned the Punjab government’s decision of levying taxes on educational institutes. There is 95% contribution of private institutions in providing technical education and in a way these institutions are creating employment opportunities and playing a vital role in the development of the country. The Government should immediately remove the property tax levied on various institutions. Its worth mentioning that like schools Higher Technical Educational Institutes were given exemption from property tax by S Sukhbir Singh Badal through Manoranjan Kalia committee report. But after six months the Government is issuing notices to the institutions to pay the taxes. Educational Institutions should not be taxed like the commercial sector and the industrial activities. Not only this the various departments like PUDA, Pollution Control Board, Electricity Department, Wildlife Department keep the educational institutions trapped by sending notices to educational institutes
Chairman of various institutions can give right direction to thoughts of the youth of Punjab only when such departments provide them with relaxation in rules and regulations and do the necessary with cooperation. If Punjab Government will not take this into consideration than the technical institutions will have to struggle for this and this may in turn harm the youth of Punjab. Technical Educational Institutes will soon be submitting a memorandum in this regard to the Chief Minister, S Parkash Singh Badal. Such a behavior towards the promoters of educational institutions is not a good for the growth of the nation.
