CHANDIGRH, APRIL 30:Ms Rakhee Gupta Bhandari, IAS, Director Social Security Women and Child Department, Government of Punjab, was unanimously elected president of the Chandigarh Dancesport Association, with the mantle of honorary secretary falling on Gurdeep Singh Sethi at a meeting held in Sector 34 here on Wednesday. Ravinder Talwar was named senior vice-resident. Others elected unanimously were Inderdeep Singh Gill (vice-president), and B.D. Gandhi (treasurer). Rahul Bhandari, IAS, was named the adviser.
The meeting decided to tap talent of youngsters of the City Beautiful who are adept in this event. It was also decided to bring to Chandigarh a top professional dancing couple to teach the steps to those who wish to compete in national and international events. Rock n roll was added to the dancesport at the last World Games. The other dance forms include tango, waltz, fox trot, Viennese waltz and quickstep, jive, paso doble, rumba and samba and cha cha cha.
Dancesport has become the latest craze with 18 Asian countries taking part in the event at the Asian Indoor Games organised by the Olympic Council of Asia at Macau on November 27 and 28 last year. The 2005 World Games saw 85 countries participaing in dancesport with the officials of the International Olympic Committee present at the function.
