Under the banner of Panjab University Teachers’ Association (PUTA) teachers, students and many members of civil society today staged a candle-march on the P.U. campus against corruption in India. The march began from Gandhi Bhawan and ended at University Gate No.1. PUTA President Prof. Akshaya Kumar while expressing his concern at the growing levels of corruption exhorted his colleagues and teachers to join the movement against corruption. He cautioned that the movement should remain firmly in the hands of the activists of civil society and should not be exploited for narrow political ends. Prof. Manjit Singh, former President PUTA also underlined the utmost urgency of the anti-corruption campaign. He said that the entire enterprise of education collapses if at the end of the day the non-deserving take control over resources through corrupt means and illegal practices. The universities as nurseries of future citizenry have to take lead in cultivating modern values among the youth so that they could emerge as the future hope of resurgent India. Shri. Gurdeep Singh, President, Panjab University Staff Association (PUSA) said that the movement against corruption is now irrevocable, and from now it has to move forward Dr. Khalid, Secretary PUTA asserted that civil society and democratic institutions must work together towards the enactment of Jan Lokpal Bill. While re-iterating the need to work within the frame of Indian Parliamentary democracy, he hoped that the recent stalemate between the activists of civil society and central Government would be over soon as corruption is an overwhelming issue that concerns all.
He said that the seriousness of movement need be vigilantly guarded lest it falls in the hands of politically motivated groups and parties which themselves are corruption- infected. Shri. Rajiv Godara of Sampoorn Kranti Manch, expressed hope that the movement launched by the actors of civil society would reach to its logical conclusion and the government would concede to the demand of an effective Jan Lokpal Bill. Earlier in the morning PUTA executive held emergency meeting and decided to hold the protest and join the nation-wide movement against corruption.
