CHANDIGARH, SEPT 30 : Punjab and Sind Bank regained the trophy after prevailing over Punjab National Bank with an aggregate 5-3 margin in shootout session in the final of the 43rd S.N. Vohra’s All India Gurmit Memorial Hockey Tournament organized by Rock Rovers at the Sector 42 Hockey Sadium here this evening.
Both were balanced teams and had nearly equal number of opportunities and they capitalized on two chances each to share honours with a 2-2 draw in the regulation period.
Both played a cautious game and Punjab and Sind Bank were the first to open their account when Karamjit Singh beat the Punjab National Bank for a field goal in the 23 minute.
The Punjab National Bank players worked hard and met with their initial success in the 30th minute through Yudhvir Singh who scored a field goal to neutralize the lead (1-1).
Punjab National Bank gained a 2-1 lead in the 37th minute as their striker Damandeep got past the Punjab and Sind Bank defenders to score.
Punjab and Sind Bank immediately retaliated restored parity in the 40th minute when Parminder Singh hit the ball into the net (2-2). Thereafter the teams resorted to more defensive tactics to avoid conceding any further goal. The regulation period produced four goals and the penalty shootout rule was applied. Punjab and Sind Bank emerged winners.
The winners and runners-up teams were presented cash award of Rs. 75000 and Rs. 50000, respectably
