Chandigarh, January 28: Smt. Ratna, who was recently appointed by the Congress President Smt Sonia Gandhi, as President of Punjab Pradesh Mahila Congress Committee, was formally installed here at the Congress Bhavan, Chandigarh.
PPCC President Mohinder Singh Kaypee and Leader of the Opposition, Smt Rajinder Kaur Bhattal were present at the function which was attended by a large number of workers of Mahila Congress from different parts of the state.
Congragulating Mrs Ratna on the occasion, Mrs Rajinder Kaur Bhattal said that she deserves to be the leader of the Punjab Pradesh Mahila Congress for she has not only been an active party worker but also an active social worker. She added that Congress is the only party in India where in women find equal representation.
PPCC President Mohinder Singh Kaypee said that Mrs Ratna represents not just the Mahila Congress but ‘Mahila Shakti’ as well. He added that her leadership would infuse new spirit into the Mahila Congress.
Speaking on the occasion Smt Ratna said that she would be strengthening the women cadre of Congress Party and mobilizing them to work for implementation of various social legislations impacting female foeticide, minimum age of marriage, anti-dowry and for the welfare of the widows. Winning all the thirteen seats in the forthcoming elections would be their endeavour.
Women empowerment and upliftment is possible only if she gets educated, she added, and the Mahila Congress would by forming self-help groups and micro-credit finance facilities ensure that the women in Punjab get empowered. She hoped that a large number of women shall be involved with Mahila Congress in Panjab to educate and empower the women as also support the party in the forthcoming elections.
Smt. Ratna had been the chairperson of Punjab State Social Welfare Board (2004-08), and chairperson of Amritsar Improvement Trust (2003-05). She has been President of Youth Congress (Mahila), in Amritsar during 1976-80, and Vice President of Punjab State Mahila Congress (1980-85), besides being chairman, Punjab Women and Children Development and Welfare Corporation (1993-96)
A post-graduate in Economics, Mrs. Ratna is daughter of freedom fighter Late Dr. Manohar Singh Sidhu, who was imprisoned in Jaito Morcha along with late Shri Jawahar Lal Nehru.
