CHANDIGARH, NOV 28 : Hosts Panjab University defeated Kurukshetra University by 66-50 in their last match in the four-team round robin league programme of the North Zone Inter-University Basketball Championship which concluded at the floodlit PU Campus courts here on Friday night. It was their third successive triumph and Panjab University remained unbeaten for the title.The runners-up position was claimed by Delhi University after beating Punjabi University of Patiala by 83-63 in their last league outing. It was Delhi University’s second win. Punjabi University, with one victory and two loses, were third while Kurukshtra were at the bottom without any victory.
All these four universities have qualified for the All-India Inter-Zonal Inter-University Championship which will be conducted by the Panjab University here from December 12 to 15.
Kurukhsetra opened their camptaing on a promising note against Panjab University as the visiting team won the first quarter by one point (19-18). In a neck-an-neck fight the score read 4-4, 6-6, 10-9, 12-12 before Kurukshetra just managed to win.
Panjab University, with Rajan Sharma, a BA Part I student of Government College of Ludhiana giving a sterling display, outplayed their rivals in the second quarter which they pocketed with a good margin of 31-11. Keeping their pressure, Panjab University clinched the third quarter by 14-10 and were sitting pretty at 63-40 at that stage. Thereafter Panjab University used the substitute players. Despite losing the fourth quarter by 3-10, Panjab University still emerged victorious.
The tallest player of the tournament Yatin (11) easily sank baskets from under the ring. However, the best player was cool and competent Rajan Sharma (16). Gurbaj Singh topscored with 17 points and Abhit contributed 14 points for the winners.
For Kurukshetrra University, Jatin contributed maximum points 19 while Mohit and Parveen made 7 and 8 respectively.
Earlier, Delhi University beat Punjab University for the second place. Parveen (22), Gurvinder (20) and Vupin (14) formed a good combination to fashion win for Delhi. For Punjabi University, Rupiner (18), Gurlal (15) and Ramanpreet (12) were the main scorers.
