CHANDIGARH–April 11, 2008: Prof. R.C. Sobti, Vice-Chancellor, Panjab University released a book “Current Issues and Solutions on Environmental Sciences” in his office here today.
Prof. Sobti observed that present book is a potential document of knowledge for higher education. It can be utilized in the teaching and research in interdisciplinary curriculum of graduate and postgraduate students in Indian Universities and their associated colleges. The book provides potential resources of knowledge for global research. He expressed his satisfaction that the diamond jubilee year has seen among other achievements a publication of immense value to mankind. The 217 page book has fourteen chapters and deals with contemporary issues pertaining to environment. Eminent authors from various organizations and universities abroad and India have contributed articles. They include Prof. R.J. Strasser (Switzerland), Prof. Jiaojun Zhu (China), Prof. J. Behari (JNU), Prof. Raj Bahadur, Prof. M.K. Rai (Amravati University), Prof. R.C. Sobti, C. Nirmala, Prof. J.K. Chauhan, Dr. Nandita, Prof. Naval Kishore, P.U. The book, one of the select publications compiled and edited by Prof. D.V. Rai (Editor) has five chapters by him. Prof. J. Behari, and Dr. Ashwani Koul are (Co-editors) and the book has been published by Ideal Ideas Graphics, Chandigarh.
Prof. D.V. Rai, the editor and contributor of the book, did his M. Sc. from B.H.U., M. Tech. from I.I.T. Delhi and Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences from J.N.U. Widely travelled and associated with Universities in U.S.A., his teaching and research interests are biomedical Physics, Nano-bio materials and Environmental Sciences for last 30 years. He has authored twelve chapters in various teaching and reference books, over 60 papers in National and International Journals and has one patent to his credit. He strongly believes that Environmental Science without human consciousness is lame, Human consciousness without Environmental Science is blind.
Wide range of topics from Environmental biodiversity, Human dominated eco-system, Disaster Management, Gene-environment, Electro-magnetic Pollutions, Impact of Mining, E-Waste, Bioremediations, Urbanizations and Environment, Environmental Education and Protection Law have been covered. It gives useful summary of information regarding energy, bio and E-waste, diversity in the environment and how these affect the environmental quality and result in impacting human health. There are several possible mechanisms which are manifested in biological, physiological events and modulate to trigger bio-effects. The recent technological modalities in waste management treatment are also highlighted. The reports and data on safe doses of various national and international agencies are also documented. It recommends that some remedial measures for future generation should evolve new modalities to keep the safe environment. It emphasizes the need for sustainable scientific and technological developments for environmental monitoring management and protection.
