CHANDIGARH- October 13, 2008: The Panjab University Ecological Society is deeply concerned with the fatal tampering with nature and the reckless misuse of our surroundings. As a part of the green campaign, a group of teachers and students under the dynamic leadership of the Vice Chancellor, Panjab University, Prof. R.C.Sobti have planted over twenty thousand trees as well as eight gardens namely Bougainvillea, Hibiscus, Trifla, and Mango on the campus both in sector 14 and sector 25.
The campaign at the Panjab University is historic as nowhere else have academics taken on themselves to generate a culture of concern for the environment so seriously and with the resolution to adopt values so vital to such an initiative aimed at saving the Earth.
The Panjab University Ecological Society began seriously to promote the banning of polythene bags much before the Union territory of Chandigarh took this very significant step. To further give encouragement to the residents of Panjab University all members of the Society have been given sling bags by the Hindustan Times Group for conveniently picking up any plastic bags that may litter the campus. Under the aegis of Khanna Watch Company, all members of along with about 100 gardeners have been also given green tee shirts with the slogan ‘Think Green’ embossed on them. It is deeply encouraging to see the Vice Chancellor along with the faculty members and the gardeners all dressed in green shirts with bags slung on their shoulders taking a round of the campus at 6 in the morning, diligently planting trees and picking garbage. Their efforts are fast showing tangible results visible in a greener and cleaner campus and in spreading a deeply felt concern for the environment.
As Professor Sobti remarked, ‘We all deeply feel that we have a purpose and will to act. The initiative taken by the Ecological Society will go a long way in promoting a healthy and a greener environment. If each one of us without any hesitation uses his bare hands to pick garbage at least in our residential areas, we can all contribute to the development of a keen civic sense in our society’ according to Shelley Walia.
