Jorawer Singh, Chandigarh, September 7, 2009: Taking a serious view of the incident in which a journalist, Mr Ramanjit Singh Sidhu was assaulted and injured by a property developer and his security, Chandigarh Press Club today appealed to the Punjab Chief Minister, Mr Parkash Singh Badal and Deputy Chief Minister, Mr Sukhbir Singh Badal to directly intervene in the matter and ensure exemplary action against those involve in the attack on Mr. Sidhu and also against those Police officers who have attempted to shield the attackers.
“The Press Club strongly condemns the incident, manner and the attitude of the police administration which was seen trying to shield the perpetrator of the assault by not invoking the relevant section of law.” said Mr Sarabjit Singh Pandher, President of the club. He rued “The Punjab Police personnel deployed for the security of the builders are being used for intimidation and settling scores.” Suggesting improvements, Mr Shergill, a retired Intelligence Officer, proposed “Government should have some feedback mechanism, to review the security and also periodic transfer of such staff before they develop personal intimacies.”
