Dr. Avnish Jolly, Chandigarh, 7th October, 2008 :"Poompoohar 2008" a five day cultural event, being organized with the collective efforts of Government of Tamilnadu and the Chandigarh Administration will start from October 15. The event would involve various departments of Government of Tamilnadu and Chandigarh Administration in collaboration with North Zone Cultural Center (NZCC), Patiala and South Zone Cultural Center (SZCC). The Governor of Punjab and Administrator UT, Chandigarh, General (Retd.) S.F. Rodrigues and the Governor of Tamilnadu Mr. Surjit Singh Barnala would jointly inaugurate the Poompoohar on October 15. The details were worked out in a meeting held under the chairmanship of UT Home Secretary, Mr. Ram Niwas. The meeting was attended by Residetn Commissioner, Taminadu House, Mr. Jagmohan Singh Raju, Director, SZCC, Mr. K.V. Giridhar and Director Public Relations, Mr. Vivek Atray.
Poompoohar 2008 would focus on the promotion of the Art and Culture of Tamilnadu to the other states of the country, support Tamilnadu’s tourism and expand marketing opportunities from Artifacts and Crafts of the State.
The Cultural event would provide an opportunity to the residents and visitors in City Beautiful to comprehend, admire and feel the art and culture of Tamilnadu.
Number of activities would be organized during the cultural event including exhibition cum sale of Handicrafts, Sarees & Tapestry, skill demonstrations, music and dance programmes, costume shows and food mart. The venues for the cultural events comprise of Museum Complex, Sector 10, Leisure Valley, Sector 10, University Campus, City Plaza, Sector 17 and Sukhna Lake.
The SZCC with active participation of NZCC would organize the cultural show showcasing the folk and classical art forms of South India as well as North India. During the cultural event Tamilnadu Tourism Development Corporation, Poompuhar and Cooptex will also set up their stalls to exhibit paintings, handicrafts and textiles.
