Y.S. RANA, CHANDIGARH—Old is gold, it is said but it is not so when it comes to look after old people in a family. The para legal volunteers—Ms Sunita and Ms Harpreet Kaur— of the State Legal Services Authority (SLSA), Chandigarh did a commendation service when they have rescued a senior citizen in Ram Darbar.
During survey in Ram Darbar, Phase 2, Chandigarh, the PLVs came to know that Smt Lilavati has been kept under confinement by her children in House No 1135. She has been kept in a dingy, unhygienic and highly vulnerable condition in a small room since long. She was not looked after properly by her children and not providing food, clothing etc.
Her two sons both married are staying with her in the same house. While talking to the old lady, it was found that she was tortured and maltreated and kept aloof from the public eyes.
The PLVs with the help of Women and Child Unit raided the premises and rescued the Old lady and she has been referred for medical assistance to GMCH 32, Chandigarh.
Mr Mahavir Singh, Member Secretary, State Legal Services Authority stated that the Authority is striving hard for the betterment of the society in every possible work and is trying to approach the grassroot level of the Authority for their well being.
The Authority has been conducting various Legal Services Camps for the Senior Citizens, Recently the Authority conducted one such camp in Village Dhanas and various benefits were given to the Senor Citizens on the Spot.
Under the able guidance of Hon’ble Mr Justice Surya Kant, Executive Chairman, State Legal Services Authority and under the aegis of National Legal Services Authority, the State Legal Services Authority, U.T., Chandigarh has adopted the Scheme of NALSA(Senior citizens Scheme) 2016. It has already adopted the Campaign for Senior Citizens -You are Not Alone.
He further stated that today, it was use and throw, be it a battery, a gadget, a gear, father or mother. Those days, it was use, remember and respect. Old homes of the past are old-age homes now. Donations to charities and orphanages are bountiful now. Temples are mushrooming in every colony. Yet, humanity is drying up, and about divinity, the less said the better.
