The India Post, Chnadigarh, 25th September, 2008:The Center for Adult, Continuing Education & Extension, Panjab University, Chandigarh organized A Panel Discussion on the theme of Women in the Present Scenario. 40 students and faculty of Sanskrit Department attended the discussion.
Mrs Renu Gandhi Programme Co-ordinator initiated the discussion on Atrocities on women in relation to female ratio, literacy, infant mortality, divorce, crime and female foeticide. These atriocities forced the society to think that there is a need to sensitize the families on the issues related to women.. She expressed that this could be done only when education, self management and decision making power go hand in hand among women and which in return would help to increase female ratio, literacy level and decrease the Crime rate divorce and foeticide.
Shri Sudhir Baweja, Incharge Vivekanand Studies discussed relevance Vivekanand Concept on women in the present scenario. He discussed that women with the help of education and economic development raise the status in society. Women herself should realize her power to grow for their own self but not in relation to man’s power
Dr Avinish Jolly, Physician and Expert on HIV/AIDS discussed women and HIV. He expressed his deep concern that of the total HIV patients 50% are women and it is tragic that they could not take decision in relation to use of condom which resulting into increase the cases of HIV/STD among women.
Prof. Vikram Kumar from Department of Sanskrit, Panjab University expressed the personal qualities of women. These are love, affection, tolerance, dedication for work. Creative confident and quickly get over failures. These qualities of women would help themselves to have different roles in society even in the unstructured situations. There is need to sensitize the male to give respect to these qualities for their happy family life rather consider it as their weakness.
Dr. Meena Sharma, a Social Activist raise the issue of property rights among women. Prof. V.P. Upadhayaya, Chairman, Department of Sanskrit, P.U., Chandigarh in his concluding remarks that there is need to check the exploitation of women and at the same time women should also do her duties in the society as a mother, daughter, sister and as a wife according to Dr. Sween, Director, Adult Education, P.U.
