CHANDIGARH, OCT 13 :Hosts New Public School, Sector 18 won the girls trophy without any sweating as their rivals and defending champions IS Dev Samaj School of Sector 21 gave a walkover in the final of the 11th CBSE Cluster XIII Inter-School Basketball Championship for boys and girls held at the NPS courts here today.
The Dev Samaj girls came to the court and warmed up. As the match was about to start they left the court giving walkover to their rivals.Sacred Heart, Sector 26 defeated Carmel Convent of Sector 9 by in a classification match to decide the third and fourth places.
The result of the boys final has been withheld as NP School lodged a protest against Sanjeev Rao of SD Public School alleging that he was overage and not eligible to compete.
The final was played at a fast pace. After losing two quarters at 10-16, 17-18, SD Public School bounced back into the game with vengeance and narrowed the margin by winning the third quarter by 13-7.
They went all out according to their game plan in the fourth and final quarter.Three consecutive three-pointer by Deepak was the turning point of the match. Tall Amyjot (23), Sanjeev Rao (23), Deepak (15) and Kanwar (8) were the winners main scorer. With few minutes left, Kanwar of SD Public School completed his five individual fouls and came out.
Gurjot and S Cheema of NP School committed five fouls each and were out before the fourth quarter.
CBSE observer Rakesh Verma confirmed that he had received a protest from NPS alleging that Sanjeev Rao was not eligible to take part since his date of birth is 1989. The CBSE authorities in Delhi have been apprised of the situation and after verification the result would be announced, said Verma.
If the protest is upheld, SP Public School may be scratched.
However, the SD Public School authorities said "according to our records, Rao’s date of birth is 1990 and is eligible to compete."
In a third and fourth position match Guru Nanak Public School, Sector 36 defeated Maharaja Hari Singh Agricultural Collegiate of Jammu by 66-33.
