Chandigarh August, 29:-The country celebrates the Birth Anniversary of Hockey Legend, Major Dhyan Chand as National Sports Day on 29th August every year. The Sports Department in conjunction with Education Department, Chandigarh Administration also celebrated the National Sports Day in a big way at Hockey Stadium, Sector-42, Chandigarh. The Adviser to the Administrator, Mr. K.K. Sharma was the chief guest on the occasion. Finance Secretary, Chandigarh Administration, Mr. V.K. Singh accompanied the chief guest.
A promotional race of 400 students was organized in the beginning of the function. An exhibition Hockey match between the Veteran International Hockey players and the girls of Chandigarh Hockey Academy was played. In the interval of the Exhibition match, a demonstration of Ancient Martial Art “Gatka” was organized, followed by Modern fencing by the players of Fencing Academy, Chandigarh.Addressing the Sportspersons, the Adviser, Mr. Sharma said that it always feels good be part of such events that are connected with the young people. He congratulated the players for securing different positions at different levels in the Nation School Games. Girl students were also applauded for motivating and encouraging the people to shun down the fear of giving birth to girl child. The Adviser remembered the Legend Dhyan Chand on his birthday for giving a new meaning to the Indian hockey.
24 Veteran Sportspersons and 255 boys & girls along with their coaches, who secured first three positions by representing Chandigarh Schools teams in the National School Games held during the year 2010-11 was honored.
The Chandigarh Sports Council felicitated 9 International Players in the game of Rowing, Skating and Table Tennis for their achievements during the year 2009-10 along with 3 coaches, who have imparted training to them. Cash awards worth Rs.5.00 lacs were given to the players for securing the different positions in different games.
