CHANDIGARH, July 13:Left-handed Munish Bhardwaj of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited and Nadia Saini of DAV Coaching Centre claimed the men’s and women’s singles titles, respectively, in the Bhavan Hawk’s 14th Bhavan Vidyalaya Chandigarh State Ranking Table Tennis Tournament which concluded at the Sector 23 Table Tennis Hall here today.
Munish took 43 minutes to snuff out the challenge of Rachit Chopra of Panjab University by 11-5, 9-11, 11-5, 11-5, 11-8. After losing the first game, Rachit Chopra, trailing 4-9 in the second game, rallied with determination to win and at 11-9 to level the score one-all.
Munish was down 0-4 in the third game before bouncing back into the game with a vengeance to win by 11-5 with some smashing shots and flicks. The BSBL official then enhanced his lead to 3-1 with an 11-5 verdict. The fourth game was evenly contested as they were tied at 3-all, 5-all and 6-all. Munish forged ahead at 9-6. Rachit did not give up easily as he narrowed the score to 8-9. Thereafter Munish display good match temperament and gained two successive points to emerge champion.
Earlier, defending Dev Saini was upset by Munish Bhardwaj in the quarter-finals by 16-14, 13-11, 11-9, 6-11, 3-11. Dev Saini, however, had the consolation of retaining the junior boys singles title after beating Sumit Chaudhary of Ajit Karam Singh International Public School 11-6, 11-6, 11-7, 11-6 in the final.
Naina Suri claimed the junior girls crown at the expense of Kalyani whom she defeated by 11-7, 6-11, 11-8, 12-10, 11-8.
Punjab Additional Director General of Police SM Sharma distributed the prizes.
