Dr. Avnish Jolly, Chandigarh, 1st November,2008 :Centre for Emerging Areas in Social Sciences, Panjab University organized the closing ceremony of Diamond Jubilee Celebrations at ICSSR Complex here today. The celebrations commenced with a special talk by Mr. V.K. Bhawra (IPS) I.G. Police, Punjab on Human Rights having bearing on Police Administration and Social Work.
He discussed how police administration stands at cross roads with both Social Work and Human Rights and how they can be made to work harmoniously. He also emphasized the need to lay equal stress on duties along with rights. Prof. R.C. Sobti, Vice-Chancellor, P.U. also graced the occasion with his presence and motivated the students to take the institution to newer scales of excellence.
The talk was followed by adjudging Poster Exhibition on varying themes such as female foeticide, environment, smart policing, women empowerment, say no to drugs, ‘no smoking’ among others.
A documentary was displayed titled “Ek Tha Bachpan: The Lost Childhood”. This docu-drama revealed the callousness of a juvenile justice system that strips a child off his innocence and renders him defenceless before the law.
The students of social work made a power-point presentation on their enriching experiences in the field. The students from Police Administration and Human Rights & Duties also shared their experiences.
The vote of thanks was delivered by Prof. R.K. Sharma. Other prominent persons to grace the occasion were Prof. B.S. Ghuman, Prof. R.K. Gupta, Prof. Kiranpreet Kaur, Dr. Swarnjit Kaur, Co-ordinator, Human Rights & Duties was the Convener of the celebrations and conducted the proceedings.
