Barinder Saluja, Chandigarh,Feb. 07 : The festivity of the season was ripe as the Environment Committee of MCM DAV College for Women, Chandigarh celebrated Vasantotsav-2011. The event was organized to celebrate the onset of the season and simultaneously spread awareness towards health, nature and environment. The college, decked in various shades of yellow, exhibited a perfect picture of the bounties of the season with all its color, vibrancy and fervor. The singing sensation of Punjabi and Sufi music, Satinder Sartaaj was the Chief Guest at the event. Sartaaj not only appreciated the panoramic cultural colours and jubilation of MCM, but also complimented the college on devoting its energies towards the revival of the rich tradition of our country. Students also sang and hummed the hit tunes of Sartaaj with him and profusely requested him to present his chart topping numbers. Sh. Yashvir Arya of DAV Hardwar was the Guest of Honour for the day. He applauded the overwhelming festive spirit of the institution and profusely appreciated the college’s efforts to blend the cultural and traditional with the natural and the environmental.
The festival included a wide range of activities and entertaining exercises for the students of the college who adorned their traditional yellow attires and walked the ramp with the exuberance of the spring season. From Kite Flying to Rangoli making, from “Tie and dyes” to Decorating with kites and Hand Painting, from Floral extravaganzas to Musical treats, from Punjabi dances to yogic musical fusions, the college was pulsating in the spirit of springing cheer. The event included competitions and contests in poetry writing and recitation in Hindi, English and Punjabi, Landscaping with food items and food wastes to convey varied messages on environmental preservation, On-the-spot games to develop time management skills, decoration on yellow themes and Eco-friendly Rangolis and innovative e-kite designing to lend a techno-festive spirit to the event. A Basant Princess competition for students and a Basant Queen Contest for faculty members were also organized at the event. The college also put up food stalls serving seasonal delicacies and stalls and kiosks for organic foods and herbal products. A stall was also put up by the Khadi Village and Industries Corporation exhibiting and selling Jutties, Suits and Herbal products. The college also organized a Bird watching trip for students to the Sukhna Lake where migratory birds from various countries have come at this time of the year.
The Principal of the college, Dr. Puneet Bedi said that the event was designed with the dual purpose of welcoming the coming season with cheer and spreading a wave of culture and tradition among the students. Dr. Bedi said that the college has always been fervent in blending tradition with technology and modernity and festival is a vivid picture of this motto. Dr. Bedi also re iterated that the students must be alive to the significance of nature and environment and developing a healthy and harmonious lifestyle blending all these.
The event coordinator Dr. Vini Arora said that the event was a traditional way to educate students in matters of the environment and nature.
The event also invited Mr. Paramjit Singh, Director of the Regional Centre for Entrepreneur Development, Chandigarh who gave away certificates to students who participated in a month long course organized by the Centre at MCM. Prizes were also given to various contest winners of the day.
