Y.S. Rana ,Chandigarh— Turn the vision of UT Administration into reality, government schools of Chandigarh will be provided with latest learning devices in the classrooms. Now students can learn by way of exposure to real-life situations, and classroom teaching going beyond the confines of text-books. Better still, they can look forward to widening of their awareness canvas.
As a step in this direction, the Chandigarh Administration in collaboration with Focus Technologies, New Delhi has set up seven multimedia Lang Labs in seven government schools, first of its kind in the region under a scheme of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan. “Sealed with the objective of making learning en enjoyable experience, integrating students with society and preparing them for future challenges the step is in sync with UNESCO’s World Declaration on Higher Education,” said the official.
Each school has been given the license for sixteen users; one Teacher’s Console and fifteen student work stations. The Lang Lab Platform and the Lang Lab English language learning software have been supplied by Focus Technologies, New Delhi.
Aimed at widening of their awareness canvas and exposing students to real-life situations, the labs roll out a road map for big-ticket reforms in the education system by effecting changes in various spheres. Typically it fulfils two essential educational needs. These not only will cater to the needs of multiple intelligences of the new generation learners but also make them more and more self-reliant. Computer Assisted Language Learning Labs (CALLLS) combine the two to raise proficiency levels of users in English communication skills and in any discipline be it Math, Science or Hindi provided the relevant software have been installed. English Language Labs will enable the teachers to remotely control, monitor, broadcast, and assist students directly.
With powerful functions and friendly user interface, English Language Labs will not only facilitate the teaching process but also bring fun and efficiency in learning. The teacher can connect with all the students collectively and individually. Similarly the students can connect with each other as pairs and groups or work individually from their workstation computer screens with or without the teacher. The teacher can even block the students from using the keyboard if she needs to say while broadcasting something on all the screens.
Recording student performances and storing them to follow it up with comprehensive feedback are all functional capabilities of this platform. The teacher can also link up with web-based resources and customize them for students enable them to speak, read and write correct English and enriching vocabulary. , they do not know the relevant framework or structures of job applications and reports of different kinds and even interviews and group discussions.
Teacher has a computer with appropriate software for conducting language exercises and teacher and student positions are connected via LAN (local area network) and, in some cases, separate audio cabling • A server computer or a separate storage device is often used to store lesson materials in a digital format.
Through these labs text, images, audio and video can be easily integrated into lesson plans. Teachers can alter materials to fit their requirements. Teachers can manage and monitor students’ work; teachers and students can interact with each other and store results.
The Language Lab software allows them to record operations from their
desktop into a file and then playback the file to students as in Clarity Snet class software made available to schools.
Paperless Examination with multiple formats of exams like one answer multiple choices, alternate & easy type with images. Automatic grading of each student’s result & transfer the result to every student.
The necessary training has been imparted on uses of language lab to the teachers at elementary level by the resource persons of Focus Technologies at GMSSS, Sector 10 on August 18, 2011. EOM
