Manoj Kumari Godara, Chandigarh, 4th Dec 2010: Chandigarh-based Architect-Planner Jit Kumar Gupta has been elected as national Vice President for the term 2010-12 in closely-contested elections by defeating Maharashtra-based architect Prakash Deshmukh. For other posts following are elected: President: Prafulla Karkhanis, Treasurer: Vijay Garg, Joint Honorary Secretary: Debabrata Ghosh and Paresh Kapadia. The Indian Institute of Architects (IIA) is the national body of Architects in the country. Having started in the year 1917, the Institute today has more than 17000 members. The Institute has a major role to play in promoting the profession of architecture by organizing and uniting in fellowship the Architects of India to promote aesthetic, scientific, and practical efficiency of the profession both in Practice and in Education. IIA is represented on various national and international committees connected with architecture, art and the building industry and is also actively associated with International Union of Architects (UIA), Commonwealth Association of Architects (CAA), and South Asian Association for Regional Co-operation of Architects (SAARCH).
Jit Kumar Gupta, Director, College of Architecture IET Bhaddal has vast and varied experience spanning over 41 years in the area of Urban Planning, Development, Management, Planning legislation, Policy Planning and Architectural Education.
He has the distinction of serving number of parastatal and state agencies including Department of Urban Planning Chandigarh, State Department of Town Planning, Urban Development Authority, Agricultural Marketing Board besides College of Architecture, IET Bhaddal.
He is a Fellow of Indian Institute of Architects & also Fellow of Institute of Town Planners (India).
Graduated in Architecture in 1969 Mr. Gupta holds Masters in City Regional Planning, Bachelor in Laws, Masters in Public Administration, Post Diploma in Gandhian Philosophy and advance Diploma in Management of Urban Development (UK). He has the distinction of standing first in the University in Master of City & Regional Planning & Gandhian Philosophy and was awarded Medals in token thereof.
Mr. Gupta is a member of Board of Studies of Punjab University, Punjab Technical University & Lovely Professional University in the faculty of Architecture. He was awarded Vishawa Karma Award for contribution to the filed of Architecture and Planning in 1994.
Mr. Gupta was invited by University of Berne (Switzerland) to give two lectures on Chandigarh, Architectural Society of China to present paper on Energy Efficient Design of Human Settlements during ACA-12 and by Napalese Architects Association on Heritage Conservation during ARCASIA.
Mr. Gupta has authored/presented/published more than 150 technical papers in International/National level seminars on issues related to Housing, Architecture Urbanization, Environment, slum, Conservation and Preservation of Built Environment, Heritage, Planning and Designing of Sustainable Human Settlements.
Mr. Gupta is presently working as member of the Committee for preparing revised Master Plan of Chandigarh Capital City, Six Master Plans of State of Punjab including Metropolitan Centre Amritsar. He has also worked as Team Leader for preparing City Assessment & Development Strategy for 4 towns of Gujrat under the World Bank Project and Team Leader of preparing City Development Project for Jammu. In addition, Mr. Gupta was nominated as member of State level Committees constituted on issues related to Urban Planning and Development.
